Distance education has long been possible. Through correspondence courses, educational institutions sought to make educational opportunities available to a larger section of the population. With the arrival of the Internet, distance education became easier and more diverse.

In the past, the options for distance education were limited. Even though a number of schools offered correspondence study, few were able to offer all of their degree and certificate programs to correspondence students.

By virtue of the complexity of operating a distance education program, schools found themselves limited in resources and had to offer only a certain number of programs through distance education.

Other hindrances and challenges caused by geographic distance also impacted the courses which could be offered through such programs as well. Those which required interactive study, with need for the presence of other students, equipment, or classroom resources, could obviously not be included in these offerings.


The geographic distance in traditional distance learning programs also had its limits when it came to instructor and student interaction. Even the most well-designed course could not offer a student the same benefits as a traditional classroom setting. The absence of the professor or other instructor required students to be capable of learning the material essentially on their own and without the ability to ask questions, listen to real-time lectures, or interact with study groups.

Colleges and universities have sought several means of making the distance learning experience a more valuable one. Every effort has been made to provide a distance education that is equivalent to that of the one available through more traditional resident, classroom-centered programs.

Technological advancements in interactive media are one manner in which distance learning programs improved. The use of live lectures, teleconference courses, and other advanced technical tools made it possible to shorten the distance between students and instructor. The arrival of the Internet and the advancements made in recent years with the interactive technologies available for use online have only served to change education even further.


Since early in internet history, the distance learning model has been available to online students; however, the current use of virtual classrooms has made that model somewhat different. The early distance learning opportunities available online followed the same basic methods as any other distance education program. They were primarily self-study in nature, requiring the same level of dedication on the part of the student and limiting their interaction with the instructor, other students and essential learning tools needed.

The virtual classroom has allowed students to acquire a distance education that rivals that of resident programs. Virtual education is still similar to traditional distance learning programs in that the instructor and student are still separated by space. The course work is still provided through a variety of means but the methods and technologies for delivering that information have changed with virtual education.

Instructors and Professors are able to provide course content through various programs, including multimedia resources, videoconferencing, course management applications, and real-time virtual classrooms. Students are able to interact with one another and the instructor through these same programs.

The introduction of the virtual classroom has improved the educational experience for many who participate in virtual education programs. Many of the programs out there are only text-based, self-study programs but the use of virtual classrooms is becoming more and more common due to the essential benefits it provides students and instructors alike.

Virtual classrooms allow real-time interaction between the instructor, the student, and other students participating in the course. Through the virtual world of the Internet, class participants are able to interact with one another in a manner similar to that of a real-world setting. The main difference is that these classrooms may be filled with individuals from all walks of life and from any number of locations throughout the world.

Students are able to appreciate the benefits of an education from a variety of institutions without ever picking up and moving to the geographic area in which the college or university is based. With the advancements in technology, many educational institutions now exist as virtual universities. Some are still anchored in the real world by an affiliation to, or as an extension from colleges and universities which offer resident programs.

However, in recent years there have been a number of virtual universities which have been built as internet-only locations. These institutions do not have a geographic campus and don't offer resident programs. They are available only through online courses and degree programs, and have students, instructors, and alumni from around the globe.
